Hidden gems in the Cayman Islands

In a world that strives for perfection, those who appreciate individuality are the ones who truly see its beauty.

This is the thought we had when we discovered jewelry designer Lauren Kessler (aka Lauren K). A beach girl at heart (Kessler is Florida born and raised), this boss lady brings sass, edge, elegance, and a whole new aesthetic to the proverbial jewelry box.

When Lauren found herself at the head of the family jewellery business in New York’s Diamond District, she knew she had to take things in a different direction if she was going to be successful.

Gemma earrings with 6.69 ct. minty emerald and 0.29 ct. t.w. diamonds in 18K yellow gold

Uninspired by the impressive but somewhat boring perfection of the Big Three (that’s rubies, emeralds and sapphires in layman’s terms), Kessler decided to shake things up. Opting instead for one of a kind exotic gemstones full of texture and colour, and deep in character.

“I can appreciate a perfect emerald like anyone else, but that’s not me“. Indeed, her pieces are far more intriguing. Not overly fussy yet unequivocally captivating. Casual enough to wear everyday yet just as fitting at a black-tie do. Kessler is channeling her inner beach-chic it would seem.

Each stone in the collection has been handpicked by Kessler herself and chosen specifically for their originality. In fact, very few are ever chosen for their unspoiled beauty. And not all are for sale. A self-confessed magpie, her vault is rumoured to hold never seen before shades of tourmaline, stunning chunks of turquoise, labradorite, aquamarine, lapis lazuli, shimmering opals, pink sapphires and moonstones, each more unique than the last. That’s right Aladdin, keep drooling.

Look ever so closely and you really start to appreciate the beauty in her pieces. It’s at this point that a deeper understanding will come as to why Kessler has gone for character over conformity. One of a kind pieces, such as the the Mischa ring with natural bi-colour tourmaline, lend themselves a distinctive personality and unique ability to shine brighter than the rest.

It was a bold move to turn two generations worth of tradition on its head but as it turns out, it was the best thing she could have done. For Kessler, daring to be different has made life great and we couldn’t agree more. So do what makes you happy. Choose the life less ordinary, find beauty in unexpected places and wear flip flops every day.
